Dyslexia signs

Dyslexia is a learning difficulty associated with reading problems and spelling difficulties. In this part, we are going to mention the symptoms in a detailed way.

Understanding Instruction and Organization: Instruction and organization are one of the difficulties that might be impaired due to dyslexia.

Children with dyslexia might have difficulty understanding written instructions and following instructions. For example, imagine a classroom where there is one teacher and students. The teacher wanted students to underline all nouns in the paragraph. Children with dyslexia might underline unrelated random words due to difficulty in understanding. In addition to this, we will give another scenario in order to create a clear picture in your mind about following instructions. In an art course, the teacher said, “ Draw a yellow triangle and a red square.” Drawings of children with dyslexia can be correct yet have mixed-up colors.

Furthermore, disorganization in tasks is regarded as one of the dyslexia signs as well. We observe this in two domains: Reading and spelling.

Reading problems are one of the most common problems. Children with dyslexia face difficulties in this domain. There are various challenges with reading: Slow reading speed, trouble with reading fluency, and reading comprehension struggles.

Spelling difficulties: Besides the reading, there are simultaneous writing challenges. Handwriting problems, inconsistent spelling, and reversal of letters and numbers. We would like to give an example in order to enable you to get a comprehension of that symptom.

It means the tendency of children with dyslexia to make mistakes while writing. For example, imagine you spell “d” as “b.” Children with dyslexia may write the “d” down as “b.”

Phonemic awareness is another component of dyslexia. Phonemic awareness refers a the skill to hear, identify, and manipulate the individual phonemes in spoken words. This domain shows us that children with dyslexia struggle with breaking words into sounds, matching letters to sounds, blending sounds into words, and difficulty recognizing sight words.

Recognition of sight words is a component within the phonetic awareness domain. In the terminology, sight words, also known as high-frequency words or Dolch words, address words that children detect by sight instead of phonetic sounds. These kinds of words do not follow systematic rules or patterns. Therefore, they are not easily decoded by using standard reading techniques. Sight words are essential for reading fluency because they show up regularly in the given text. Kids with dyslexia might have to look at them longer.
